Ever since I heard about our esteemed (or not so esteemed depending on your opion) leader's position on the whole Michigan diversity/quotas/extra points thing, I've known that I agree with him but couldn't come up with a good way to describe my feelings. Allison went and did it for me! Wasn't that nice of her?
I'm all for diversity. But I'm also a big fan of fairness. Yeah I know, life isn't fair. (at least that's what my parents always say)
I realize that absolute fairness isn't going to happen, but just because it can't happen doesn't mean that we shouldn't strive for it. Especially universities.
Getting into a college or university or any other higher education is a privledge. It isn't a right. College is supposed to be for the best of the best intelligence-wise. If you're good at art you go to an art college, theatre then a theatre college. Different colleges focus on different abilities and they recruit people with those abilities. They shouldn't take people without those abilities to fill an artificial percentage system.
Being accepted into a college should be based on abilities, on achievements, not on things with which you are born. Whoops, we don't have enough blue-eyed people better go find some. How are we doing on people with brown eyes?
It's ridiculous!
